About KilowattKit
Free home energy calculators built on official data — no email required, no results hidden behind forms.
Who runs this site
I started KilowattKit out of personal frustration. A few years ago I was trying to work out whether switching to a heat pump was actually worth it, whether solar panels would pay back before I moved, and how much my old appliances were really adding to my electricity bill. I spent hours digging through government websites, industry reports, and comparison calculators — and came away more confused than when I started.
Most tools either hid the formula, required an email address to see the result, or were clearly built to push you towards a product sale. I wanted something that just showed the maths, cited the source, and got out of the way.
So I built it. I don't have an engineering background — I'm a researcher and a reader. I read the primary sources (EIA, Ofgem, Natural Resources Canada, the Australian Energy Regulator) and I build calculators that reflect what those sources actually say. Every figure on this site traces to an official document, and every calculator shows the formula it uses so you can check my work.
KilowattKit now covers the US, UK, Canada, and Australia — 29 free calculators, government grant guides, and energy guides, all without a signup form or a paywall in sight.

What KilowattKit is
KilowattKit publishes free home energy calculators and educational guides to help homeowners and renters understand how they use energy and what changes might cost or save.
Every calculator on this site shows its formula, lists its assumptions, cites its sources with verification dates, and produces a result in under 10 seconds with no personal information required.
We cover electricity, heating and cooling, solar, EV charging, appliances, and home insulation — across the US, UK, Canada, and Australia.
What KilowattKit is not
- ✗ We are not financial, tax, legal, or investment advisors
- ✗ We do not sell energy plans, solar installations, or appliances directly
- ✗ We do not guarantee savings — our outputs are estimates with stated assumptions
- ✗ We do not gate results behind email addresses or phone numbers
How we make money
KilowattKit is supported by display advertising (Google AdSense) and, in some cases, affiliate referral links — for example, links to solar quote services or smart thermostat retailers.
Affiliate relationships do not affect our calculator outputs, our data, or our methodology. Every page that contains a referral link carries a disclosure. See our Editorial Standards for the full policy.
Our data sources
Every numerical default on this site traces to an official source. We refresh rate data quarterly and display a "Last verified" date on every calculator. Full source list: /data-sources.
