Almost everyone guesses wrong about which appliances cost the most, and it's always the same mistake: confusing power with consumption. A kettle or a hair dryer pulls a huge amount of power β€” 2,000 to 3,000 watts β€” so it feels expensive. But it runs for minutes. Meanwhile a fridge sips a fraction of that power and never, ever stops.

The number that actually lands on your bill is energy = power Γ— time, measured in kilowatt-hours. That single equation is why the top of this ranking is dominated by two kinds of appliance:

  • β†’Things that heat (water heaters, showers, space heaters, ovens): heat is expensive because it needs enormous power and sustained time.
  • β†’Things that never switch off (fridges, freezers, routers, standby devices): individually small, but 8,760 hours a year adds up.

The appliances people fret over β€” the microwave, the toaster, the TV, a single LED bulb β€” sit near the bottom precisely because they're low-power, short-use, or both.

Notice what's not here: nothing you plug into a kitchen socket. If your bill is high, the answer is almost always in hot water, heating, cooling, or an EV β€” not the appliances you switch on and off by hand. That's also where the biggest savings live: a heat-pump or solar upgrade attacks the top of this list, not the bottom.

The Always-On Trap: Small Watts, Big Hours

Here's the counter-intuitive one journalists love. A broadband router draws just 10 watts β€” nothing. But it runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year: 8,760 hours. That's about 90 kWh a year ($16), which beats the microwave (55 kWh) and more than doubles the toaster (20 kWh) β€” appliances that feel far more "powerful".

Add up every always-on device in a typical home β€” router, TV and streaming boxes, smart speakers, consoles in rest mode, chargers left plugged in β€” and standby load reaches 200–400 kWh a year. It's real money, but the lesson isn't "unplug the toaster". It's that a handful of devices running all the time can quietly out-cost the ones you actually notice using.

Anything that heats water or air. In most homes the single biggest electricity user is the water heating and space heating/cooling system β€” an electric storage water heater alone uses around 4,000 kWh a year, and central air conditioning about 2,000 kWh. After those come electric vehicles (if you charge at home), hot tubs, tumble dryers and the fridge-freezer. The US Energy Information Administration attributes roughly 19% of home electricity to air conditioning, 12% to space heating and 12% to water heating β€” nearly half the bill before you reach any plug-in appliance.
Do appliances on standby really cost anything? β–Ό
Yes, though less than people fear. Always-on devices β€” broadband routers, TV and streaming boxes, smart speakers, game consoles in rest mode β€” typically add up to 200–400 kWh a year across a home. A single broadband router left on 24/7 uses about 90 kWh a year, which is more than a microwave or a toaster. It is real money, but switching off a fan or an LED bulb saves far less than reducing hot water, heating or tumble-dryer use.
How much does it cost to run a tumble dryer for a year? β–Ό
A standard vented or condenser tumble dryer uses roughly 450 kWh a year at four loads a week. At mid-2026 rates that is about $79 in the US, Β£117 in the UK, C$63 in Canada and A$144 in Australia. A heat-pump tumble dryer uses roughly a third of the electricity (around 160 kWh a year), which is why it is one of the biggest single upgrades you can make to a laundry room.
Is it cheaper to boil a kettle or use the hob? β–Ό
A kettle, for boiling water, almost every time. An electric kettle puts nearly all its energy straight into the water and switches off the moment it boils, so it wastes very little. A hob or stovetop heats a pan and the surrounding air too. Over a year a well-used kettle (about four boils a day) uses around 160 kWh β€” only boil what you need and that figure drops sharply.
How much electricity does an electric car use at home? β–Ό
For a typical driver doing around 10,000 miles (16,000 km) a year, home charging adds roughly 3,000 kWh to your annual electricity use β€” comparable to adding a second water heater. That is about $524 in the US, Β£783 in the UK, C$420 in Canada and A$960 in Australia at mid-2026 rates. Charging overnight on a dedicated EV or off-peak tariff can cut that cost dramatically, which is why the tariff often matters more than the car.
Which kitchen appliance is the most expensive to run? β–Ό
Continuously running ones win over powerful-but-brief ones. A large American-style fridge-freezer (around 600 kWh a year) costs more over a year than an electric oven (about 290 kWh), even though the oven draws far more power when it is on β€” because the fridge never switches off. This is the key idea behind the whole ranking: annual cost is power multiplied by hours, so a low-wattage device that runs 24/7 can easily beat a 2,000-watt appliance used for minutes.
Do LED bulbs really save that much electricity? β–Ό
Yes β€” the difference is dramatic. A single old 60-watt incandescent bulb left on five hours a day uses about 110 kWh a year; the equivalent 9-watt LED uses about 16 kWh. That is roughly seven times less electricity for the same light. Across a whole home, switching every remaining incandescent or halogen bulb to LED is one of the cheapest and fastest-paying energy upgrades available.
